Why Ride?

Child Cancer Research No explanation necessary, do the simple arithmetic, 1 rider = 10 sponsors at $10 each multiplied by 400 riders = $40,000 for the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia. In 2005 only 25 riders submitted sponsorship forms but we raised $10,000! 100% of funds raised go to Child Cancer Research, an investment in Hope, for children and parents everywhere.

Support Clover Moore’s Bike Plan This is worth getting excited about. A good bike plan could transform our city.

An excellent system could be built beside existing rail lines at little expense, railway lines have few steep hills to pedal up. This would link most major centres.

A proper alternative transport system would make Sydney a world model. Imagine! Clean air, tree lined streets, less traffic congestion and fit citizens.

We currently have an embarrassing 41% of our citizens overweight! If we had off road cycle ways people could act individually to do something about Global Warming while getting fit themselves. Healthy citizens are far more economically efficient; they also suffer much less from stress and depression. Sydney would win on economy, health, the environment, beauty and tourism.
If you would like to live in such a wonderful city then help us support Lord Mayor Clover Moore’s exciting vision, she can’t do it without us. Sydney is a city of achievers, we can make our city whatever we want it to be.

FUN! We aren’t asking you to do anything you won’t like. Get painted or dress up and ride to the beach in high summer, through the best city in the world, with a bunch of beautiful people. What more motivation do you need?

Pride We will make the news all over the world. We will prove to the people of the world that Sydneysiders take great pride in themselves and their city. Take a bit of trouble, decorate yourself or just turn up and we'll paint you.

Reclaim your body! Your body belongs to you, not the preachers, or the spectators, or anyone else. It’s just another body, don’t fret about your appearance, love yourself! Everyone looks great in a coat of paint or a costume. Break out, it’s much easier in a group!

Life You only get one and yours is passing right now. Have you ever done anything amazing, anything artistic? To see and even more so to be a part of an amazing artistic event is really very worthwhile.
Feeding the soul with colour and beauty has long been recognised as vitally important to both physical and mental health. All the ancient (and modern) philosophers agree. If you take part you will feel exhilarated, empowered, and you will have a story and a memory that will last for life. You could even put it in your CV. I know we would prefer you! You will have proven that you are compassionate, a lateral thinker and an achiever. Good assets and very rare in the one package.

Religion Almost all religions share some form of ceremony which involves a procession to the shore and the ritual immersion and cleansing of their particular symbol or idol of devotion. Most religions also claim that God is within you. We have all heard the saying “your body is a temple”. Be a part of a religious/secular procession that includes all beliefs and celebrates our diversity. It is magic!

Too much Bad News Help us create a Good news story about ordinary people doing something positive for their city and the world.

Global Warming Still looking for a reason to ride? Well here’s a clincher.
Global warming is occurring, there is no debate about that. It will get very bad, probably worse than any period in human history. .
These are facts. As usual we are collectively doing our best to ignore them. Please consider replacing some of your car trips with bike rides. Help us fight for a better, more sustainable system for Sydney’s commuters.

Nationalism It would be un-Australian not to ride with us, Come on Aussie, The world is watching. Be in it! Celebrate your freedom to do so, in many countries you would never be able to take part in a ride like this.

Child Cancer Research Ok, you must have a heart of stone if you’re still not convinced. Why don’t you try this? Imagine if a child that you know became ill, really ill, i.e. “C-word” ill. You would gladly do or give anything to help that child but unfortunately you would be completely helpless. The scientists and doctors at CCIA are working hard to find that cure but scientific research costs a lot of money. The more funding they have the sooner a cure will be found. That’s all you can do, help them with hard cash. Get some sponsors and get on your bike!

Last but not least…

Because they hate our freedoms! President Bush explained to the world that the reason the terrorists attacked the 'World Trade Center' was, “because they hate our freedoms!” In a way he was right, religious extremists do hate our freedoms.

Rationalism, Science and the free availability of knowledge, make it almost impossible to raise your children as ignorant fanatics these days. Many religious groups are having the same problem.

Here in Australia we love “our freedoms” and we love to celebrate them. We despise wowsers and always have done. Please join us.
